What is Earth Hour?
Earth Hour is a worldwide event organized by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and held towards the end of March annually, encouraging households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights for one hour to raise awareness about the need to take action on climate change. It was started in 2007 and now more than 96 countries participate in it.
When is it going to be held?
Earth Hour 2013 will be held on March 23, 2013(today) from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. during participants’ local time.
Who supports Earth Hour?
Earth Hour is supported around the world by Nelson Mandela, supermodel Miranda Kerr, cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, the United Nations General Secretary Ban Ki-moon, Greenpeace International Executive Director Kumi Naidoo, former Vice President Al Gore, the President of Fiji Ratu Epeli Nailatikau, André Kuipers and the International Space Station, actress Isabel Lucas, TV stars Bill and Giuliana Rancic, Colombian television presenter Claudia Bahamón, Yoko Ono, Stephen Fry, Cate Blanchett, Coldplay.
How can I play a part when my city is (or isn’t) participating in it?
Switch off (and plug out) as many electric devices as you can in your house – lights, TV, AC, heater, laptop, computer, refrigerator, bulbs etc. Just for an hour!
This post is my attempt to spread awareness about the Earth Hour and encourage people to participate in it at an individual level as well.
